Spring fatigue and what lies behind it

The days are getting longer again , we are enjoying the first warmer rays of sunshine and the first plants are starting to bloom - spring is coming and nature is awakening from its winter sleep.
Currently, many people are experiencing intense sleepiness or a lack of energy , known as spring fatigue. Despite getting enough sleep, they feel tired during the day. Some also suffer from dizziness, circulatory problems, headaches, and difficulty concentrating. These symptoms typically appear after the first warm days of spring. However, this is not a disease; rather, the human body needs to slowly adjust to the new climatic conditions.

Causes of spring fatigue

  • Temperature fluctuations: One of the triggers for spring fatigue is temperature fluctuations, which occur much more frequently and more severely in spring than in winter. In cold temperatures, blood vessels constrict to minimize heat loss. As outside temperatures rise, they expand slightly again. This leads to a slight drop in blood pressure, which can cause fatigue and dizziness in some people.

  • Hormonal changes: The sleep hormone melatonin and the happiness hormone serotonin compete for energy. In winter, the body, due to evolutionary reasons, switches to economy mode, with increased production of melatonin, which is only released in the dark, enabling restful sleep. As the days lengthen in spring, light intensity increases, promoting increased production of serotonin. Serotonin is responsible for physical activity and a positive mood. At the same time, the release of melatonin is inhibited. It can take up to a month for the hormone balance to completely adjust.

Tips against spring fatigue

  1. Drink enough water
Water helps detoxify the body and prevent fatigue and concentration problems. Drink 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day.

  2. Use solar power
Go outside around midday, because the sun gives us fresh energy and recharges our internal batteries. Among other things, our vitamin D levels are replenished by the sun.

  3. Alternating showers and sauna visits
Both train the blood vessels and stimulate circulation.

  4. Nutrition
In winter, we tend to eat more substantial meals. However, these can make our bodies sluggish when the weather warms up. Eating smaller, lighter portions can help ease the burden on our bodies.

  5. Vitamins
Supplemental intake of vitamins and micronutrients can support bodily functions, such as the immune system and metabolism. These include vitamin C, the vitamin B complex, manganese, magnesium, and zinc.
